True, I never took Jim Simpsons car anywhere, much less near the surf. He let me photograph it and I thought this setting was a perfect foil for the open top beauty that his Italia bodywork so nicely enhanced.

Mr. Simpson let me come up to his part of the world and photograph his italia. He'd clearly put his best effort into the car, which is a work of art unto itself. Really an outstanding re-body concept. Here it is in his driveway.

Raindrops and Reflection for the Girl
48" X 70" Painting Near Completion
I loved the concept of a girl, entranced by simple wonders of nature such as raindrops and her reflection in a puddle even as the great busy hubub of man made distractions and attractions calls for her attention. Leah modeled for this.
The canvas has a long history. Stretched in 1983, never painted on till 2000, and then the shepherd girl painting was sanded off and covered over to make way for this image.

Nauvoo Illinois USA LDS Temple
Trying to get a decent painting of the Nauvoo Temple has cost me more money and research time than any other. I flew out there and walked the grounds and went in and did ordinance work with my son and came back to do a large picture for my living room and another for my boss. This view was too fun not to do. But still, the one my boss wanted has proved impossible. And my living room painting has been lent to the Stake. So this is the one I have in my house.

Brice canyon area southern Utah. For a wedding gift, I offer a painting. Brenda didn't want a big one. She asked for a desert picture, since Brent likes that. This picture makes a great desktop background.

Alpine Chipmonks

The original idea was to portray hikers in this remote place. They would be the background theme while the chipmonks went about their daily business of actually living in this beautiful area. But the balance of the composition would not be enhanced nor the beauty of the painting improved by the hikers, no matter how pretty or well painted they might be. So they never made it to canvas.

Butterflies and flowers by the sea

First, I primed a melanine panel. Then I scribed a circle and within that circle I textured the surface. Then I painted a waterside dusk scene of flowers and butterflies. I applied gold gloss and copper highlights to the square portion and rescribed the circle. Then I bought irridescent butterfly stickers from a teachers-supply store and stuck them on the picture to further enhance the butterfly component of the scene

I started out using a kelp forest as the symphony (background) portion of the painting and found that despite my best research I just could not paint such a scene very well. The part that did work out well is the girl, touching the surface of the water from beneath and creating ripples

"The Narrows" in Zions National Park

My son and I hiked this slot canyon in July. Really a great trip! we passed some mule deer along the way. The place is monumentally grand, mysterious, and beautiful.

I''ve long envisioned paintings wherein a daydreamer goes to the calm of a lake to meditate. Or remember. or sort out. She tosses petals, or in this case whole stems of flowers on the surface then watches the concentric ripples and the movement and the clear water.

This schematic painting offers advice on selecting a spousal companion.
Upper area represents the better world of living a principled life. The larger darker area represents the lives of those whose standards are lower. Dividing those areas is a line representing the minimum standards above which you live. Your future or intended spouse ought to have a history similar to your own, consistantly living above the same minimum standards. Others may live more or less near the standard. Some then drop well below. Others come from far beneath to live good successfull lives. When your right pick for an eternal mate is found and the two unite, they together do much better

The crispy dog was born, as far as this author is concerned, during a June month at the Idaho National Laboratory. The weekly "food bar" had alternated from potatoes, to hamburgers, to burritos, and finally to hot dogs. With remnants of both the burrito and hot dog bars available, Jeff, Jacob's shadow, began work on the crispy dog - a delicate medley of beans, tortilla, cheese, and dog - was born. What follows is a photo recipe of its construction.
